What is the history of Morocco?

Earliest recorded inhabitants of Morocco were the Berbers who fiercely guarded their independence. The Phoenician occupation on the Mediterranean Coast during 1000 B.C. and the Carthaginians’ coming sometime in the 6th century B.C., did not largely affect the Berber way of life. The northern part of Morocco became a Roman Province of Mauretania Tingitana but was overrun by the Vandals, a Teutonic people from Spain. It eventually became part of the Byzantine Empire. By the end of the 7th century A.D., all of Northern Africa had been subjugated by Arab armies. Together with the Berber tribes, the Arabs formed a powerful Moorish Empire that extended into Spain and Portugal. At the beginning of the 20th century, an international crisis emerged due to the disputes between European powers having economical and political interests in Morocco. Such crises ended in 1912 when a Franco-Morocco treaty was signed at Fez, establishing a French protectorate over Morocco. A sultan was the nominal head of the government while a French resident general was given central control over all major areas of policy. France granted Spain a smaller protectorate, where Spain’s control extended over all matters except foreign affairs. The French have much to be credited for in terms of modernizing Morocco towards economic growth. However, this did not prevent Morocco from fighting for its independence. In 1956, the country was granted complete independence. Spain’s relinquishment of its northern protectorate soon followed.
