It is called Queen of the Danube, not only for its location by this important waterway, but of the stately, old-world charm it continues to carry to this day. Many who visit it say that they are transported to Europe of another era- not that they can’t find modern amenities, but because the beautifully preserved buildings, cobbled walkways, and distinct rhythms of their language are so rarely seen in today’s urban tourist magnets. Hungary is called The Land of Healing waters, because of Lake Balaton, Europe’s largest freshwater lake. For centuries, thousands have flocked to its spas and resorts, believing in its restorative powers.

Main Attractions of Hungary

Castle Royal Palace
For 700 years, The Royal Palace has towered over the city. Built by King Bela in the 13th century to defend the city against the Mongols, its strategic location-at the center of Europe, beside the Danube-ironically invited more attacks from those who wanted to control the important waterway. The beleaguered fortress was rebuilt several times after enemy invasions, leading to a mixture of architectural styles. Today the Palace is still invaded by foreigners, albeit bearing cameras rather than swords. Its numerous historical and cultural exhibits attract Hungary’s tourists, who also visit the National Gallery, National Library, and Ludwig Museum within the complex.

Address: District I, Budavári Palota, Dísz tér 17
Opening times: The Palace is open 10am to 6pm, everyday except on Tuesdays; The Hungarian National Gallery and the Ludwig Museum are open daily from 10am to 6pm, except on Mondays.

Matthias Church
Hungary’s intricate history is reflected in this church, which bears at least one or two architectural influences from every civilization that ever passed through its lands. Built 700 years ago, its distinctly medieval interiors were hidden under thickly painted scenes from the Koran during Turkish occupation. It was reconstructed in the 19th century, decorated with lavish altars, statues, rose windows and frescoes, and given a gothic spire and a multicolored tiled roof. Today, it bears the name of one of Hungary’s most beloved rulers, King Matthias (1458-90). As a patron of learning and the arts, he would have appreciated the artistic twists and turns the church had taken-as well as the hauntingly beautiful organ and choir recitals and concerts regularly held within its walls.

Address: District I, Szentháromság tér
Opening times: Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm, Sunday from 1pm to 5pm

Statue Park
Hungary did not destroy its communist relics; the statues of Lenin, Marx and Engels that once lined its streets were transported to a park, which also has a memorial to the Soviet Soldier and the Communist Martyrs. It is the world’s only collection of Communist memorabilia. An interesting sight when visiting Statue Park are the street hawkers who sell quirky souvenirs like cans filled with the “last breath of socialism” and candles shaped like Stalin and Lenin.

Address: District XXII, corner of Balatoni út and Szabadkai út
Opening times: Daily from 10am until sunset

Lake Balaton
One of Hungary’s most popular destinations, Lake Balaton is Europe’s largest freshwater lake. Sun worshippers and partygoers tend to congregate on its south shores, where they can find pretty beaches, bars and clubs, and land and water activities.
The northern shore is quieter, and its more cultural attractions tend to attract older crowds. It boasts of beautiful scenery, mineral spas, and fine wine-the very features that first drew European aristocrats at the turn of the century, who flocked to the Lake to recuperate and be renewed. The most beautiful spot is a nature reserve on the grounds of an old Benedictine Abbey, and is well worth visiting.
