The Amazon Jungle and River

By Plane
The busiest international airports are Aeroporto Galeao in Rio de Janeiro and Aeroporto Guarulhos in Sao Paulo. Connecting flights to cities around the country leave regularly from here. Other main gateways are Manaus, Belem, which are all in the North. Varig is Brazil’s largest airline and flies into Brazil from at least 11 South American cities.
By Plane
Brazil has three major national carriers: Varig, TAM and VASP. One of these airlines serves every major city. For further traveling to smaller cities around Brazil, Varig has two affiliates, Nordeste and Rio Sul. In general, VASP is the cheaper of the big airlines.
By Bus
For long-distance travel around Brazil, buses are your best bet. Bus services are generally reliable and cheap, and all major cities have frequent departures. The three classes of long-distance buses are as follows: comum, which is the cheapest but still comfortable; executive, which has fewer stops, roomier seats and costs around 25 percent more; and leitos, which offers pillows, air-conditioning and attendants serving sandwiches. It can cost up to double the price of a comum. All the big cities and some small ones have one central bus terminal, located near the outskirts.

Taxis in the cities are reasonably priced. Prices can increase at night and on Sundays. Some fares are fixed, usually from the airport to the city center and vice-versa.

Brazil is a special country. The climate can best be described as a Tropical wet-dry climate. The standard annual temp. is 25,5 degrees Celsius °C. In winter the temperatures drop a bit. It is then (on average) about 22,7°C degrees. In the summer it is warmer. Assume 27,2 degrees centigrade °C. In the schedule below you get an impression of the weather of the coming days.
In the summer months of November to March, it can get extremely hot. Pack light clothes and shirts, but bring jackets if the air-conditioning gets too cold.
In Brazil, there are four main regional cuisines, which are comida mineira from Minas Gerais, based on pork, vegetables and tutu, a refried bean used as a thick sauce; comida baiana from Salvador, made up of shellfish, peppers, palm oil, coconut oil and coriander; comida do sertão from the Northeast, which uses salted meat and beans and tubers of the region; and comida gaúcha from Rio Grande do Sul, where every kind of meat is grilled. Feijoada can be considered Brazil’s national dish, a stew of sausage and pork cooked with garlic and black beans. On weekends, restaurants serve it all day.
Brazil is split into four time zones: For the Fernando de Noronha archipelago, GMT/UTC minus two hours; the east, northeast, south, and southeast, GMT/UTC minus three hours; in the west, GMT/UTC minus four hours; and the far west, GMT/UTC minus five hours.
A 10 percent service charge is included on most restaurant and hotel bills. Taxi drivers do not get tipped, and hairdressers and beauticians are expected to get 10 percent. Bellboys get tipped per bag.
