1. Venice
Oh, Venice. I’ll never tire of this watery city, despite having visited more than 10 times already. I love the crumbling buildings rising out of the dark green water. I adore the narrow, labyrinthine streets and little bridges over canals below. It’s such a fun city to explore on foot and on the water too. Venice at night is my absolute favourite. All of the day-trip-tourists have left and it becomes wonderfully quiet. Almost deserted in comparison to the frenzied fullness of daytime. Wandering through the quiet streets in the evening is blissful and perfect. Don’t judge Venice before you get a taste of it at nighttime.
2. Bologna
Bologna is an Italian destination that might not be on your travel radar, but it certainly should be. Located in the north of the country, in the Emilia Romagna region, this is one of Italy’s hidden gems. The terracotta roofs of the city are stunning against the bright blue sky and the architecture is simply gorgeous. Strolling around the streets of Bologna is the perfect way to spend some time. If you’re a lover of Italian food (honestly, who isn’t?!), the Emilia Romagna region has the best of the best. This region is home to parmesan cheese, real bolognese sauce, balsamic vinegar, piadina and much more. It’s a food lovers paradise!
3. Rome
I’m pretty sure Rome will always be somewhere I like to visit. Each time I’m there I discover new places and new things I like. The sheer amount of history in Rome is fascinating and much of the Roman architecture has been incredibly well preserved. The building in the image above, The Pantheon, is one of my favourites. Definitely don’t skip it during a visit to Rome. In summer Rome is incredibly busy, but visiting in winter or spring can be ideal. Fewer tourists, cheaper prices and more time to savour all that’s good about Roma.
4. Florence
Florence is yet another stunning Italian city. The river Arno cuts through the city and the Ponte Vecchio bridge that joins both sides is world-famous for good reason. The architecture and art in Florence is incredible and its main square is the perfect place to admire them from. If you’re feeling brave you can climb the 364 steps to the top of the duomo for some panoramic breath-taking views out across the city.
5. Sorrento
Sorrento is pretty much the perfect Italian seaside holiday destination. The Italians have been holidaying here for hundreds of years and as soon as you visit, it becomes clear why. The location in the Bay of Naples is absolutely stunning and the views out to sea and over to Mount Vesuvius are enchanting. There are also so, so many things to do nearby Sorrento, like the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, Capri, Ischia, Amalfi, Positano and so much more. It’s the perfect holiday spot for people who like to relax, but who also like to have lots to do if they want to.
6. Capri
Another amazing destination in the Bay of Naples is Capri. This little island paradise has been attracting the jet set for so many years and is incredibly popular in summer. One of my favourite things we did last year during our Italy trip was hiring a boat for the day and sailing around the island. Seeing all the different rock formations and immense beauty of the island was incredible. We chose a few different spots to anchor our boat and go for a refreshing swim too. The island itself offers quite a few things to do and see. There are several different towns to visit and plenty of different walking and hiking opportunities. Of course, there are also some fantastic places for relaxing and people watching. Ideal!
7. Santa Margherita & Portofino
Santa Margherita and Portofino are two gorgeous little towns on the north west cost of the country. They are both idyllic, picture-perfect seaside locations that are perfect for chilling out in. Portofino is the most famous of the two locations, but is incredibly expensive to stay in. My top tip is to stay in nearby Santa Margherita, a larger and more reasonably priced seaside town, and visit Portofino for the day from there. Santa Margherita itself is adorable, with colourful buildings, a lovely pebble beach and plenty of great places to eat and drink.
8. The Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast is probably one of the most well-known stretches of coastline in the world and once you set your eyes on it it’s incredibly easy to see why. The entire coastline is so beautiful it has been named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and attracts visitors from across the globe. Hire a car and enjoy driving along the twisty, turny roads with amazing views at every turn, or do it a little differently on a boat trip and get to see the coastline from another angle. There are so many gorgeous towns to stop in along the way, including Ravello, Positano, Amalfi and more.
