Suriname is located on the South American continent and has a tropical climate. The name “Suriname” is probably a corruption of Surinen, an indigenous people who used to live in Suriname. In addition to the coastal strip and a savanna area, the country consists for the most part of green rainforests with fast-flowing rivers and dense jungle, which borders the Amazon region of Brazil in the south. Large parts of Suriname have hardly been explored and have not yet been discovered by major tourism. Social and societal life takes place in the capital Paramaribo, where many relics of the colonial period can be found. Hindu temples and mosques can be found here as a result of the wide variety of population groups, each with their own culture, including Hindustani, Creoles, Chinese and Javanese, but also inland residents and indigenous people. This diversity gives everyday life a colorful and exotic accent, which can be found in the markets, among other things.
In the jungle and the other hard-to-reach areas, transport takes place mainly by canoe (a kind of canoe) over the water, often over raging rivers with many rapids. Roads are lacking in many parts of the country. Various population groups live in the rainforest, including, for example, the Saramaccan inland inhabitants, who still have traditions based on African culture. There are also communities of Indians.
