Book cheap hotels in Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea is perhaps one of the most colorful, culturally diverse, and naturally rich countries in the world. While the nation’s abundant topography visually creates its diversity, this is all the more enhanced by its’ indigenous inhabitants who belong to four ethnic groups : the Islander, Highlanders, Papuans, and New Guineans. Add to that the 800 different languages of the islands. Papua New Guinea is only the other half of the tropical island of New Guinea, and includes the smaller islands and atolls in the Pacific. Its spectacular coral reefs give this country an international stamp as a premier scuba diving destination. Volcanic islands, some of which are volcanic, scenic mountain ranges, and largely untouched by human intervention.

Portuguese explorer Jorge de Meneses first sighted the island in early 16 th century. But it was not until mid 1800s when European missionaries and merchants settled on the island’s coastal areas. It was claimed by the Germans, the Dutch, and the British, but only came under foreign control by Australia after the First World War. For the first time in the 1930s explorers finally broke into the once-impassable highland area. To their surprise, they also discovered some 1 million people indigenous to that part of the island since the pre-historic times. A significant move for independence that started in the 1960s eventually led to its full independence in 1975.

Top 4 locations

  • South New Guinea: This 60 mile-long trail in South New Guinea was first in the 1890s by gold miners. But it is more infamous for its being the site of the bloody battle during the World War II between Japanese forces and Australian forces. Hiking from Port Moresby to the Owen Stanley Range takes 5 days.
  • The Highlands: This region is composed of many separate regions, each of which is worth visiting. But the most interesting of them all is the Southern Highland region which was among the last places to be discovered, and home to some of the most interesting tribal groups in the New Guinea region. The largest indigenous group, the Huli, is known for their unique styles of cultural adornment. The famous whitewater rafting site, the Mendi River, is located in the Southern Highlands. The Eastern Highlands prides itself of the country’s highest mountain, Mount Wilhelm. The mountain summit offers panoramic view of New Guinea’s north and sough coasts. Another famous spot in the area is the Wahgi River, considered as one of the world’s finest whitewater rafting destinations. The Western Highlands is the site of the Baiyer River wildlife sanctuary. This rainforest is the sanctuary of the largest population of birds of paradise, and wildlife species. It has hiking trails for easy navigation in the area.
  • Madang: The Bismarck Sea in this charming town of Madang holds numerous underwater excitements waiting to be discovered. The coral reefs that serve as habitat for a wide variety of colorful sea creatures, and the submerged wrecks of 34 Japanese fighter planes, make this site as a perfect scuba diving spot.
  • Manam Island: The allure of the Island of Madang lies on the fact that a still-active volcano formed it. Among those activities that can be done is trekking up the southern part of the volcano. But almost always the summit is unreachable due to the steam-caused cloud cover.
